INDIANAPOLIS EAC 2024

LOT 70 1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny Nelson-12 with P Before Face R3 VF30. Ten points sharper but there is a thin fissure in the planchet from the rim at the top of the obverse through the nose into the field below. A corresponding fissure passes up through the 7 and front of the harp to the elbow. Otherwise the only defect is a splash of dark toning at the top of the obverse and bottom of the reverse, and the dark areas contain traces of very fine roughness. The planchet is not perfectly round, rather crude in fact, but the devices are bold. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate except for those smaller dark splashes. The repunching on the 6 is clear. Weight 114.8 grains.

LOT 73 1775 British Counterfeit Halfpenny F15. Glossy chocolate brown and steel. The date and legends are clear and there is an impressive set of die cracks on the upper reverse. Weight 96.9 grains.

LOT 74 1785 Connecticut Miller 8-D R5+ Mailed Bust Left, PCGS graded VF30. Frosty olive and steel brown with lighter reddish brown in protected areas on the reverse from an old cleaning. Attractive with very little wear but there are a few planchet striation voids, mostly on the left side of the obverse. No verdigris or notable contact marks. The base of the 1 is off the planchet but the rest of the date is strong. MDS with swelling before the face. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 686820.30/42634181

LOT 71 1773 Virginia Halfpenny with Period, Newman 24-K MS60. A variety with 7 harpstrings. Frosty medium steel brown with generous traces of mint red showing, particularly on the reverse. Satiny and very nice, superior to the Newman example of the variety sold in his 5/16/2014 sale by Heritage Auctions

Ex Norman G. Peters, Stack’s 11/22/2021:2033

LOT 75 1786 Connecticut Miller 2.1-A R3 Mailed Bust Right, ETLIB INDE F15. Ten points sharper but covered with fine granularity and parallel planchet striations on both sides. No marks or verdigris, but there are two curved planchet clips, a large one at K-1 and a smaller one at K-4 (as struck of course). Light olive brown and chocolate. The 1 in the date is weak but the other digits are easily readable. The ETLIB INDE feature is strong. Weight 83.5 grains.

LOT 72 1787 Machin’s Mills Halfpenny Vlack 17-87a R2 VG8. A bit sharper but the surfaces are dull from microscopic roughness and there is a narrow planchet void at the top of the head. Grayish chocolate and steel brown. The date and legends are easily readable. Weight 107.4 grains.
