Torres Half Cent Collection

EARLY CENTS

LOT 4 1793 C-4 R3 Liberty Cap, Head Left, AU50 PCGS. Choice glossy light brown blending to light chocolate. Mint frost shows in protected areas and this half cent has outstanding eye appeal. Essentially flawless with light friction on the highpoints of the devices and microscopic contact marks, none visible without the aid of a glass. A tiny planchet flake over the I in AMERICA can help identify this piece. MDS, Manley state 2.0, Fuhrman state 2, and Breen state II-III. The lump at the top of the 7 is strong, fine die rust shows in the obverse fields, and the die clashmarks of Breen’s state III between the cap and hair are clear. This is the Breen plate coin for die state II on page 78 of his 1983 Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents 1793-1857. Nicely centered on a choice planchet. A superior example of this classic American half cent. Our grade is EF45 . 1000.50/42423577 $45,000 Ex (possibly Ebenezer Gilbert)-unknown-Stack’s 11/1968:447-Donald Groves Partrick Collection, Heritage Auctions 4/23/2021:3594 (as NGC graded XF45, CAC)-Stuart Levine (who had it regraded by PCGS to AU50)-Chris McCawley 8/20/2021-The J.
