1187 Emergency issue of the Roman Senate. L. Cestus and C. Norbanus. Gold Aureus (7.99 g, 20mm), May-August 43 BC. Rome. Draped bust of Africa right, wearing elephant skin. Reverse: Curule chair, its front legs adorned with eagles, surmounted by two confronted serpents, EX S.C. – PR; L.CESTIVS above, C.NORBA below. Crawford 491/1b; CRI 195a; Syd. 1154; Calicó 4 (R3)- this coin. RBW 1718 (same dies), Bahrfeldt 25, pl. IV, 19 (same dies), and Banti (Cestia) 86-3. It IS the Calicó plate coin, but unfortunately Calicó gives no additional pedigree. Extremely rare variety with the EX S C instead of simply S C in the left field of the reverse, and also having the serpents on the curule chair. In NGC holder graded AU ; Strike 3/5; Surface 4/5
