1064 Seleukid Kingdom. Time of Seleukos as Satrap of Babylon. Gold Stater (8.51 g), struck under Peithon, ca. 315-312 BC. In the name and types of Alexander III. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with serpent, single-pendant earring, and necklace. Reverse: BA ΣIΛEΩΣ AΛEΞANΔPOY, Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; ΘE below left wing, monogram in wreath below right wing. Price 3710. Rare. In NGC holder graded XF ; Strike 4/5; Surface 2/5. Good Very Fine.

In 315 BC, Antigonos I Monophthalmos forced Seleukos I to leave Babylon, and appointed Peithon as satrap. Son of Agenor, Peithon had served successfully in Alexander the Great’s Indian campaigns and was appointed Viceroy of the Indus region. As satrap pf Babylon, he fought alongside Antigonos against Cassander and Ptolemy. He was killed in the Battle of Gaza in 312 BC.

Reverse: Athena, brandishing a spear and shield, in quadriga of elephants right, anchor above and NA below shield. SC 140.14avar (ΔA); HGC 9, 18a var. In NGC holder graded XF* ; Strike 5/5; Surface 4/5, overstruck.
