LOT 52 1818 N-3 R3 PCGS graded MS62 Brown . Glossy steel brown and chocolate with frosty golden light brown in the protected areas plus hints of very faded mint color on the obverse. The fields and protected areas are satiny and this cent has very nice eye appeal. Looks mint state but the highpoints show a touch of very light friction. The only notable marks are a few tiny ticks on the cheek and in the field off the chin, plus a few swipes of darker brown toning at ED and STA. Sharply struck EDS+, die state a. A strong spike extends up from the top of the coronet and a few small lumps show in the field before the face. Struck with the reverse rotated 70 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Graded AU55 in the Bland census. Noyes photo #37276. LOT 53 1818 N-3 R3 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved . Lustrous bluish steel brown and chocolate with a splash of reddish chocolate toning at the lower left point of star 6, and this spot is covered with a dusting of extremely fine carbon. Otherwise the surfaces are satiny and attractive. The only contact marks are a few nicks right of the nostril and eye, two more near the hair under star 8, and another under the N in CENT. LDS, die state b. The spike up from the coronet and the tiny lumps in the field before the face are all gone, as are nearly all the dentils on the obverse. The reverse is now rotated 30 degrees CCW and there is some strike doubling from machine doubling or “die bounce” on stars 2 & 3 and at various places on the reverse. Noyes photo #23980.
