LOT 48 1818 N-2 R4+ PCGS graded AU58 . Choice glossy medium chocolate brown with frosty lighter steel brown and tan in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only defects are a thin nick or pre-striking planchet void over the E in CENT with a larger one over that T, plus a well hidden pinscratch at the dentil tips over the D in UNITED. MDS, die state d, with an additional die crack up to the dentils from the earlier crack at UNITED-S just left of that S. The crack through the tops of UNITED is stronger but the radial crack to the dentils from the junction of the U & N has not formed. Called EF45 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #21255. Bland says EF45 as well but tied for CC#4 in his list. Our grade is EF45. 36604.58/13079756 Ex Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz 9/1973-C. LOT 49 1818 N-2 R4+ PCGS graded MS62 Brown . Frosty medium chocolate and lighter bluish steel with reddish tan faded down from mint color in protected areas on the obverse. The fields on the reverse are covered with attractive satiny mint luster. The only mark is a thin, light diagonal nick on the nose before the bottom of the eye. M-LDS, die state g, with a strong radial die crack to the dentils from the junction of the U & N in UNITED, and the section between the two radial cracks at NIT is rising as a retained cud, strongest on its left end. A rare intermediate die state and a very attractive example of this tough die variety. Called AU50 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21829. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#2.
