EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 SHARP N-6 EX NAFTZGER

LOT 22 1817 N-6 R1 PCGS graded MS65BN, CAC Approved . Highly lustrous bluish steel brown with 10-15% of the original mint color remaining, mostly on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny, the strike is sharp, and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. A puff of slightly darker toning right of star 13 and a dull contact mark on the upper lip, and another hidden in the hair below the left edge of star 8 are the only marks. Neither of the tiny contact marks is visible to the unaided eye. EDS, die state a. The dentils are sharp and delicate repunching is visible at the bottom of the N in ONE and bottoms of the C & N in CENT. Called MS65 and tied for finest known in the Bland census. Noyes says MS62 and tied for CC#7, his photo #21728. Our grade is MS63. Another very nice cent. 36565.65/13094328 Ex T. James Clarke 1948-Willard C. Blaisdell )via Del Bland 9/1976-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr.-Naftzger Estate, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 2/1/2009:26-Terry S. Denman Collection EXTREMELY RARE N-7 WITHOUT “MOUSE”

LOT 23 1817 N-7 R7 (as a die state) PCGS graded F12 . Glossy dark chocolate brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. Mostly smooth but there is some microscopic granularity in the fields and protected areas plus traces of dirt or minor verdigris in protected areas on the reverse. The only mark is an old diagonal scratch above and below the E in LIBERTY. Extremely rare EDS, die state a, before the “Mouse” break on top of the head. The reverse is sharper than the obverse, as always, because the obverse die was well worn from use in an earlier marriage while the reverse die is new. In addition the top of the reverse is not as well struck as the lower half because the dies were not in proper axial alignment (the die faces were not perfectly parallel). About a half dozen examples in this die state are known, and the finest grades F12 by EAC grading standards. Noyes photo #28012. Our grade is net VG10. 36568.12/30809065
