THE TERRY DENMAN COLLECTION

NEWCOMB PLATE COIN

LOT 165 1828 N-8 R3+ VF35 . Ten points sharper but recolored glossy light olive brown with traces of very faded red in a few protected areas. Smooth, sharp, and free of marks; the eye appeal is quite nice for a retoned cent. MDS, die state b, with a clear die crack through the tops of TED extending strongly from the left top of that T to the dentils over the adjacent I. The reverse of this cent is plated to represent reverse H in the 1944 Newcomb reference on the cents of 1816-1839 (Plate VI). Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & C0. 5/16/1945:599-Floyd T. Starr, Stack’s 12/4/1984:1657-R. S. “Robbie” Brown, Jr., Superior 9/30/1986:653-Robert E. Matthews, Superior 5/28/1989:678-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 5/30/2010:266-Greg Hannigan 8/11/2010-Terry S. Denman Collection

LOT 166 1828 N-9 R4 EF45 . Slightly sharper but there are traces of fine carbon or verdigris in protected areas on the reverse, mostly around the N in ONE. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and frosty and the toning is an attractive chocolate with lighter brown in protected areas. A single thin nick on the jawline is the only notable contact mark. Sharply struck MDS. This cent has very nice eye appeal.
