EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
EQUAL FINEST EARLY STATE N-36
LOT 367 1848 N-36 R5 AU55. Frosty light to medium steel brown with peeps of mint red on the obverse and generous traces of red on the reverse. There is a small area of lighter reddish brown toning on the forehead. Just a light touch of rub on the highest points of the devices but there are some small contact marks scattered over both sides. A thin diagonal nick off the end of the nose and a dull and easily missed scrape on top of the O in ONE are the notable marks. Very early die state, the earliest seen. The fine die lines are sharp and the odd die clashmarks are bold. Tied for CC#2 honors in the Grellman census, and this one has more mint color remaining than any of the others--including the finest MS60.
