EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

SHARP 1846 N-10

LOT 325 1846 N-10 R5- AU55. Mint state sharpness but cleaned and partly retoned golden tan and steel brown. The only mark is a tiny planchet flake on the cheek and an even smaller one high on the neck, both as struck. Very sharply struck EDS, die state a. All the fine die lines are clear and every device is fully impressed. This cent deserves a better retoning. Our grade is net AU50+ , tied for CC#8 in the Grellman census. And it comes with an impressive provenance. Removed from a PCGS holder graded UNC Detail, Cleaned (PCGS label #403880.92/37577500 included, and it shows the attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance). Ex Dr. George P. French-T. LOT 326 1846 N-12 R1 Tall Date F12. Sharpness VF30 but covered with light corrosion. Dull dark olive brown and steel. There is a speck of raised verdigris left of star 5 and a dull nick right of the nostril is the only notable contact mark. Rare LDS, die state f, with a clearly defined rim cud from star 2.5 to star 5. CC#10 of the die state in the Grellman census.

LOT 327 1846 N-19 R4 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Sharply struck and very attractive with just the faintest touch of rub on the highest points of the devices. The best identifying marks are a tiny spot of slightly darker chocolate brown toning in the field close under the inner hair bun and a minor planchet lamination on the leaf over the O in ONE. E-MDS, die state b early. The die crack from the dentils at the bottom of the reverse to the ribbon loop and left side of the wreath is visible but the extension up through the E in STATES has not formed. Our grade is AU55+, close to AU58. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 403907.63/81174544
