LOT 246 1814 S-294 R1 Crosslet 4, NGC graded MS63 Brown. Lightly cleaned and retoned bluish steel and olive brown with underlying lighter reddish tan in protected areas. Lustrous and attractive with sharp details, just a touch of friction on the highpoints, and minor marks. A line of 4 ticks and a thin planchet fissure, all under the lowest curl, are the notable marks. MDS, Breen state II, with flowlined fields. Struck from misaligned dies: the obverse off to K-3, the reverse off to K-12, both affecting only the dentils. Our grade is net AU50. The attribution and Mervis Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label. 2038623-047

LOT 243 1813 S-293 R2 PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Lustrous dark steel brown with lighter brown in the field before the neck. Satiny mint frost covers the fields on both sides and this cent has very nice eye appeal. Just a hint of friction on the highpoints. The best identifying mark is a light nick on the left side of the N in UNITED. VLDS, Breen state IV, with strong die flowlines, especially strong on the obverse. Struck from misaligned dies causing weakness at stars 5-7 and the opposing area at UNIT and the lower part of the ribbon (which is common on the die state). Graded AU50 net EF45 and tied for CC#12 in the Noyes census, his photo #33383. Our grade is AU55. 1570.62/46408051

LOT 247 1814 S-295 R1 Plain 4, NGC graded MS62 Brown. Sharpness very close to mint state but this cent has been tooled, burnished, and retoned. Very attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel with satiny frost covering the reverse. Tooling along the front of the neck and under the chin removed crumbling associated with the late die state, and the obverse was then burnished and expertly retoned. Why someone would do this is a mystery to me. The reverse appears to have avoided such treatment. LDS, Breen state XIII, with a clearly defined rim cud at the D in UNITED. Our grade is AU55 sharpness net EF40 (and you could argue for a lower net grade just for the stupidity displayed here). The attribution is noted on the NGC label. 3829042 001

LOT 244 1813 S-293 R-2 PCGS VF25 CAC Approved. Chocolate and steel browns on smooth, hard surfaces. Struck slightly out of register resulting in a weaker upper obverse and lower reverse, while leaving the date and lower curls very sharp for the grade. Our grade is VF25, consistent with the PCGS grade. In an old green label PCGS holder. 1570.25/8412095

LOT 245 1813 S-293 R2 PCGS graded XF45. Frosty olive brown and steel with lighter reddish steel brown in protected areas. Possibly recolored. Smooth with only minor marks including a horizontal nick close over the 3 and a diagonal line of tiny ticks through the center dot on the reverse. LDS, Breen state IV, with flowlines and strike weakness at stars 6-7 and UNIT. Not quite as late as lot 243. Our grade is VF35+. 1570.45/46264730

LOT 248 1814 S-295 R-1 Plain 4 NGC AU58. The obverse appears to have been lightly retoned and now olive and light browns with a couple carbon specks at stars 9 and 12. The reverse Is mostly chocolate brown with lighter tan along the top periphery. There is a small, dull scratch above star 7 that blends in well. Smooth surfaces with luster remaining, particularly the reverse. Breen Die State IX with the tops of ATES merging with the rim, a light die break from the rim through star 11, the lower curl, and 8 to the rim below, and a faint crack from the rim to the end of truncation. Our grade is AU50. 4483801-010
