EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
ATTRACTIVE S-57
LOT 146 1794 S-57 R1 PCGS graded XF45. Rather frosty light olive and medium steel brown. Very light wear on the devices and no significant marks. The surfaces are slightly dull and there are some of the usual microscopic planchet flakes, mostly on the upper part of the reverse. The best identifying marks are a tick on the left side of the forehead, another mid-jawline, a couple small nicks at TA in STATES, and a spot of darker toning (not carbon) on the base of the leaves under CA. MDS, Breen state III, Heck 4, with a crack on the upper trench before the face. Struck slightly off center to K-5 leaving weakness at OF on the reverse. Graded EF45 net EF40 and tied for CC#14 in the Noyes census, his photo #61328. Our grade is EF40 net VF35+ . 901374.45/25222397
LOT 147 1794 S-60 R3 VF20+ but Holed. Glossy chocolate brown and steel. Mostly smooth with trivial roughness and minor marks, but there is a rather crude hole through the E in LIBERTY. Perhaps this piece was nailed above the entry door of a cabin for good providence, as was common back in the day. E-MDS, Breen state II, with strong die clashmarks on the obverse.
LOT 149 1794 S-70 R2 Head of 1795, Repunched 17, VF20. Very attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown. Sharply struck with smooth surfaces and excellent eye appeal. Close to VF25 but there is a rim bruise at the A in STATES. Otherwise this cent is choice. MDS, Breen state II, Heck state 3, with a clear die crack from the dentils at TY through the brow to the upper part of the cheek. There are fine die clashmarks visible on both sides but no die clashmark from the nose below ER in AMERICA. The repunching on the 17 is visible, although it is obscured a bit by dirt caked around the numerals. Removed from a PCGS slab graded VF30 (PCGS label #1365.30/5234905 included).
LOT 148 1794 S-63 R2 Fallen 4 VF20. Glossy medium steel brown with light chocolate in protected areas. Smooth and attractive but unevenly struck with strong details on most of both sides but relatively weak at the bottom of the obverse and top of the reverse due to axially misaligned dies. The only mark is a rim nick at the top of the cap. LDS with die clashmarks at the hair left of the eye.
