Ex Angel Pietri-Syd Martin Collection-Stack’s Bowers 11/8/2017:4198 (includes the Martin collection envelope and lot ticket)

LOT 97 1788 New Jersey Maris 67-v R1 NGC graded XF45. Dull dark steel and olive brown with microscopic specks of verdigris on both sides. Covered with fine granularity but there are no marks and very little if any wear on the devices. The date and legends are complete and clear. 2135441-001 MARIS 73-AA EX BOYD-FORD-MARTIN

LOT 98 1787 New Jersey Maris 73-aa R5 “Plaited Mane,” PCGS graded VF25. Glossy reddish chocolate brown with lighter brown on the devices. Rather smooth but a glass reveals minor roughness in a few places but no verdigris. Minor marks, all lost in the toning. A shallow dig off the point of the horse’s chest and a dull mark close to the plow below the beam. The date is complete and easily readable, which is unusual for this variety. Struck over a Connecticut copper. LIB shows at the end of the plow handles and NEC is clearly visible left of the shield. Unevenly struck from a very late state of the obverse die with severe failure behind the head. A really neat example of this tough variety, and it comes with a wonderful provenance. The attribution and Spiro-Ford-Martin provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 763355.25/44621867
