EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 CHOICE “BRIDLE” NEW JERSEY

LOT 89 1786 New Jersey Maris 18-M R1 “Bridle Variety,” PCGS graded VF25. Choice glossy light to medium brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the devices. Smooth and essentially flawless with great eye appeal. A minor planchet clip over US in PLURIBUS is the best identifying feature. Struck slightly off center to the bottom leaving the date tight to the edge of the planchet. The “Bridle” feature is strong and it is noted on the PCGS label. 501.25/36320769

 DOUBLE STRUCK MARIS 15-T

LOT 88 1786 New Jersey Maris 15-T R3 PCGS graded XF40. Nearly smooth showing extremely fine roughness under strong magnification, all effectively hidden under the glossy toning. No verdigris or notable marks, but there is a small, curved planchet clip under the 6 in the date. Boldly double struck. The first impression was centered on the planchet; the second was off about 5-10% to K-8. Sharp and very attractive; a great mint error. The attribution and “Double Struck” feature are noted on the PCGS label. 766262.40/37291207

LOT 91 1787 New Jersey Maris 34-J R3 “Deer Head” Variety, NGC graded F12. A “Sprig Above Plow” type. Rather glossy olive brown and chocolate with slightly lighter brown on the devices. Covered with microscopic granularity but the eye appeal is decent. Just a couple trivial marks including a tiny rim nick left of the date and another over the U in PLURIBUS. Later die state with a subtle bulge in the center of the obverse. The “Sprig Above Plow” feature is noted on the NGC label. 6054637-020

LOT 90 1787 New Jersey Maris 30-L R4 F15. Sharpness VF30 but covered with very fine granularity. Lightly cleaned with coppery tan highpoints and darker olive brown protected areas. No marks or verdigris. The date and legends are strong. Weight 139.7 grains.
