TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

THE STARR-NAFTZGER N-23

LOT 1297 1849 N-23/13 R3 AU58. A beautiful lustrous mint state cent but there is a fine, nearly horizontal scratch on the bottom of the neck. Otherwise this cent is essentially void of marks. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with generous traces of mellowed mint red on both sides. A splash of slight darker brown toning at the left top of the O in ONE is the only other mark worthy of mention. LDS, die state d, with thinned digits in the date thanks to extensive die polishing. Traces of repunching are now visible under the 1 and 4, and the field around the date is covered with very fine die polishing lines. Tied for CC#4 of the variety in the Grellman census. Comes with a very nice provenance. (This is Newcomb’s #13.)

Ex J. C. Morgenthau 12/10/1935:385-Henry C. Hines-Floyd T. Starr, Stack’s 12/6/1984:1866-Anthony J. Terranova-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr.-(via William C. Noyes)-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Hines and Naftzger collection envelopes and the Starr lot ticket)

LOT 1298 1849 N-24 R3 EF40+. Five points sharper with great eye appeal but there are some light contact marks. The notable marks are a few nicks in the field under the hair bun and a couple dull rim nicks at NI in UNITED. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with smooth surfaces and light wear. EDS+, die state a late or b early, with some but not all of the early die lines over UNIT still visible.
