TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

LOT 1010 1840 N-8 R1 Large Date EF40. Frosty light steel brown with slightly darker brown on the highpoints. Smooth with light wear. The only significant mark is a minor rim bruise at star 3. M-LDS, die state c. The short point from the throat is gone but there are no rim cuds on the obverse.

LOT 1013 1840 N-10/11 R2 Large Date VF30. At least 5 points sharper but there is a planchet lamination flake under the 84 and some very light scratches inside the wreath. Traces of glue or wax can be found in protected areas on the reverse. Glossy medium chocolate brown with traces of frosty mint color on the reverse where glue protected the coin. E-MDS, die state b. The point of the curl over the date is blunt and the die lines over MERIC are gone. This is N-10.

LOT 1011 1840 N-8 R1 Large Date AU58. A sharp, attractive cent with no wear and great eye appeal, but it was cleaned and recolored long ago. Looks choice and the toning is really nice, quite deceptive. A speck of carbon on the end of a dentil left of star 1 and a small spot of darker toning (not carbon) over the E in CENT are the notable marks. LDS, die state d, with many rim cud breaks on the obverse.

LOT 1014 1840 N-10/11 R2 Large Date EF45+. Choice glossy light brown with slightly darker brown on the highpoints. Mint frost shows in protected areas. Essentially flawless with light wear on the devices and great eye appeal. A tiny tick on the rim over the first S in STATES is the best identifying mark. LDS, die state d. The point of the curl over the date is sharp and there are rim cuds at star 9 down nearly to star 10 (Newcomb’s old #11).

LOT 1012 1840 N-9 R3 Large Date VF35. Frosty tan and light brown with slightly darker toning on the highpoints. Would grade at least 5 points better but there is a lightly burnished spot between the end of the wreath ribbon and the U. LDS, die state e, with a strong bisecting die crack across the obverse.

LOT 1015 1840 N-12/13 R2 Small Date EF40. At least five points sharper but there is a planchet lamination at the dentils and rim over MER (as struck). Otherwise smooth with light wear on the devices and attractive glossy light olive and medium brown toning. EDS, die state a. The lump under the 1 is sharp.
