TNA HOF Collection Pt 1
LOT 1275 1849 N-7 R4 Repunched 18 AU50+. Virtually mint state with great eye appeal, but there are some small rim nicks on both sides plus a light rim bruise under the 9. Glossy medium chocolate brown with mellowed red in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. Very sharply struck MDS, die state d, with crumbling inside the top of the N in ONE. The repunching at the top of the 18 is gone and several stars show some crumbling.
LOT 1276 1849 N-7 R4 Repunched 18 F15+. Sharpness VF25 with many small nicks scattered over the obverse, none significant but far more than normal at this level of sharpness. Glossy light chocolate with frosty lighter brown in protected areas on the obverse. LDS (but not quite the latest), die state f, with crumbling on the reverse. The repunching at the top of the 18 is gone.
Ex Willard C. Blaisdell 9/1976 (via Del Bland)-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr.-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Blaisdell and Naftzger collection envelopes)
Ex Larry Whitlow 1/1990 (via J. R. “Bob” Grellman, Jr.)-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr.-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Whitlow/Naftzger collection envelope)
DOUBLED DIE REVERSE
LOT 1277 1849 N-8 R2 Repunched 9, Doubled Die Reverse MS62. Lustrous medium steel brown with 10% of the mint color remaining visible on both sides. Satiny and choice except for a couple hairline scratches over ON in ONE. The scratches are barely visible and the eye appeal of this cent is great. M-LDS, die state c. The repunching at the right bottom of the 9 is gone (sometimes called a 9 over 8 overdate) as are most of the earlier die lines near the dentils at stars 2-4. The doubling on the reverse (a real doubled die, not strike doubling) is obvious, clearest at NITED STATES. A nice cent, tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census.
Ex George Ramont-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection
