TNA HOF Collection Pt 1

EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LATE STATE N-9

LOT 1208 1848 N-9 R1 VF20. Glossy light olive and medium brown. Smooth with minor marks. A small planchet flake left of star 5 is the only notable defect (as struck). LDS, die state f, with strong rim cuds at D-STATE. A rare die state, and the cuds are especially bold on this example.

Ex Robert F. LaForme-J. Mayor 2012-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 1211 1848 N-11 R5 EF40. Slightly sharper with small nicks on the obverse including a rim nick above star 5. Otherwise smooth with attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate toning. There is a small, shallow low spot in the field off the tip of the nose and a couple more around the O in ONE, all caused by debris/lubricant on the dies. Rare late die state, die state c, with a single reverse rim cud break at ES in STATES, and the cud is strong. CC#5 of those known with the single reverse rim cud.

LOT 1209 1848 N-10 R3 AU58+. Choice lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with generous traces of mint red remaining, especially on the obverse. A beautiful, frosty cent with solid mint state eye appeal. The only marks are a speck of darker toning right of the nostril and a faint diagonal hairline under the N in CENT. Just the faintest hint of rub on the highest points from mint state. Nicely struck EDS, die state a, before any die cracks on the reverse. A very attractive cent that comes with an equally nice provenance.

LOT 1212 1848 N-11 R5 VF20. Five points sharper but there is extremely fine porosity in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and the eye appeal of this cent is nice for the grade. Rather glossy steel brown with darker olive brown in protected areas. A small nick on the rim cud over TE in STATES is the best identifying mark. Latest die state, state e, with rim cuds at D-S and TES.

LOT 1210 1848 N-11 R5 AU50. Glossy light olive with frosty lighter golden tan in protected areas. Smooth with trivial marks. A small spot of darker brown toning (not carbon) at the dentils right of star 12 is the only notable mark. E-MDS, die state b, with a fine die crack at ITE to the dentils over D. The fields on the obverse are slightly reflective. An attractive piece, tied for CC#11 in the Grellman census.
