HINES-NAFTZGER 1845 N-12

LOT 1086 1845 N-12 R3+ MS60. Glossy light olive and medium brown with 5% of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. Frosty luster covers the fields on both sides and this cent has very nice eye appeal. The only mark marks worthy of mention are a thin nearly horizontal nick on the throat near the jawbone, a light scuff at BE into the hair below, and a spot of slightly darker toning at the berry over the N in ONE. M-LDS, die state c, with a thin but clearly defined rim cud break extending from the upper part of star 3 to just below the bottom of star 4. Called MS61 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #31566. Tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census. Removed from a PCGS holder graded MS65BN (PCGS label #405788.65/18900085 included, and it shows the attribution and Naftzger Collection provenance).

CONDITION CENSUS 1845 N-12

LOT 1087 1845 N-12 R3+ PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty bluish steel brown and light olive with 5-10% of the mellowed mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. The only notable defects are a faint spot of very shallow reddish chocolate verdigris on the throat and a barely visible contact mark near the dentils below star 9. The spot is not distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. Sharply struck LDS, die state d. There is a narrow but strong rim cud from star 4 down to below star 3 and fine die cracks pass through much of the reverse legend. Our grade is MS62, tied for CC#4 overall for the variety but finest of the late die state in the Grellman census.
