EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

CONDITION CENSUS 1842 N-6

LOT 1032 1842 N-6 R1 Large Date MS63. Lustrous light olive and steel brown with 15% of the planchet showing mellowed mint red. Sharp and satiny with great eye appeal and nearly flawless surfaces. A very tiny tick right of the nostril and an even smaller tick on the edge off the end of the wreath ribbon are the only marks, and they are invisible to the unaided eye. EDS+, die state a. Both of the lumps on the obverse are clear as well as the fine die lines at NITE. Tied for CC#3 of the variety in the Grellman census.

Ex Barney Bluestone 6/28/1947:1833-Dr. Kenneth J. Sartoris-Del N. Bland-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Bland envelope where he graded it MS65)

LOT 1033 1842 N-6 R1 Large Date AU58. Lustrous light brown with subtle overtones of light steel brown on the reverse. A puff of slightly lighter brown under ITE and a light rim nick right of star 8 are the only notable marks. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the devices. M-LDS, die state c. The earlier lumps on the obverse are gone but the small lump right of the E in ONE has not formed.

LOT 1035 1842 N-8 R1 Large Date EF40. Sharpness close to mint state with some marks including a collection of tiny digs over star 3, a couple light scratches on the cheek, a scrape on the chin, a nick on the jawline, and some shallow digs between the O & N in ONE. Lightly cleaned and retoned frosty light olive with lighter reddish steel brown in protected areas on the reverse. EDS, die state a. The myriad die lines around ONE CENT are sharp.

Ex George Ramont 9/1976-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Ramont collection envelope)

Ex Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 1034 1842 N-7 R3+ Large Date AU50+. Glossy golden light olive with mint frost in protected areas. The fields are smooth and hard, slightly reflective thanks to new dies. Just light friction and trivial marks including a minor spot of darker toning at the dentils left of the date. EDS, die state a. The lines and points at ME are sharp. A great die state with very sharp dentils all the way around both sides.

LOT 1036 1842 N-8 R1 Large Date MS60. Frosty light steel brown. Satiny and very attractive with underlying lighter steel brown faded down from mint color on the reverse. A diagonal nick or pre-striking planchet void on the jawline is the only notable mark. MDS, die state b. The earlier die lines around ONE CENT are gone, but the strong point up from the right top of the N in CENT is clear. Removed from a PCGS holder graded MS63BN (PCGS label #405824.63/16210047 included, and it shows the attribution).
