EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

RARE TERMINAL STATE 1838 N-14

LOT 299 1838 N-14 R7 (as a die state) G5. Sharpness F15 or slightly better but there is a large rim dent at stars 11-12. Slightly glossy chocolate brown and steel with fine roughness in the fields and protected areas. Extremely rare terminal die state, Grellman state c, with a large cud break that touches star 5, consumes most of star 6, and ends in the dentils near star 7. Less than a dozen are known in this die state. The date and legends are strong.

LOT 302 1838 N-16 R5- VF20. Ten points sharper but covered with small marks: a mix of nicks and planchet flakes. Most of the small marks are on the rims and the largest flake is over the M in AMERICA. The flakes are mint defects, the nicks are not. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate.

LOT 300 1838 N-15 R5- F12. Sharpness VF35 but there are some scratches including a strong, sharp one at the neck and a less visible but equally strong one on the ear. The other marks are relatively minor. Glossy chocolate and medium brown. EDS. One of the sharper examples known of this tough variety, but that one scratch does catch your eye.

Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions 6/5/1993:304-Dr. Wallace Lee, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 5/25/2003:876 (includes the Lee collection envelope and both lot tickets)

Ex Layton Schultz, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 1/7/1995:549-Gerald I. Mass, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/8/1998:1199 (includes both lot tickets)

LOT 301 1838 N-15 R5- VG7. Several points sharper with numerous planchet flakes on the upper half of the obverse, especially in the field before the face. The rest of the planchet is smooth. Recolored glossy reddish brown and chocolate. The notable contact marks are a rim bruise at star 2 and another at stars 3-4.

LOT 303 1839/6 N-1 R3+ Overdate 9 over 6 G6+. Attractive glossy light olive brown. Smooth with even wear and trivial marks. Choice for the grade. A couple very small ticks left of star 1 may help identify this cent. EDS, Grellman state a, with an uncracked obverse. The date is strong and the overdate feature is obvious.
