THE ERIC NEWMAN 1799
LOT 256 1799 S-189 R2 NGC AU Details Obverse Scratched Frosty light to medium chocolate brown and steel with a darker olive colored comma-shaped planchet impurity at EN in CENT (as struck). Traces of mint luster show in protected areas outside the wreath and this cent has excellent eye appeal. No notable corrosion or verdigris but there is a light dusting of dark crud in the field before the eye and some more below the hair ribbon. The only notable contact marks are two dull scratches in the field over the upper end of the hair ribbon, a dull scuff left of the lowest curl, and two tiny scratches under CENT. M-LDS, Breen state V. The date and LIBERTY are strongly struck but there are shallow low spots (caused by lubricant/debris on the die) covering much of the wreath and ONE CENT thereby blunting those details. The fine die crack from the end of the bust is clear and there are traces of fine die rust on both sides. An impressive 1799 cent in spite of the defects, and the strong date/LIBERTY combo is a big plus since so many come with significant weakness in one of those places. Our grade is EF45 net VF25. The attribution and Green-Newman provenance are noted on the NGC label. $25,000
