LOT 460 1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-5 R4 Large Planchet with Backwards N PCGS graded XF40 . Glossy medium steel gray with slightly lighter silvery gray in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and the only flaw is a chip out of the edge of the planchet affecting the top of the N in IN and the top of the N in NEW. Looks like this was a pre-striking planchet flaw, not a result of “clipping.” The date and denomination are strong but the upper part of the oak tree is weak. The legends are strong except for those elements near the edge chip where the planchet is a bit thin. The backwards first N in ENGLAND is bold. A nice example of the Large Planchet with Backwards N type. Weight 71.45 grains.

LOT 462 (1663-1672) St. Patrick Farthing Breen-211, Griffee G21-3/1a R7 F12 . Type with “Sea Beasts” below king. Glossy chocolate brown with lighter brown on the devices. Looks smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals extremely fine granularity in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and the only mark is an old, light scratch on the harp. Very late die state with massive die breaks at the top of the reverse (King side). The brass splasher shows some bright golden toning. Second finest of only 5 known according to the Griffee census, and this is the latest die state seen. Listed on page 38 in the 2023 “Redbook.” Weight 93.0 grains.

LOT 461 (1663-1672) St. Patrick Farthing Breen-208, Griffee G1-2/1b R7 F12 . Type with nothing below the king. Glossy chocolate blending to darker steel and olive brown in protected areas. Sharpness VF20 but there is a dull scratch in the field behind the king. Otherwise this piece is choice for a St. Patrick farthing. The brass splasher on the crown is toned. Griffee knew of only 5 examples of this variety, and the best of that group graded F-VF. Listed on page 38 in the 2023 “Redbook.” Weight 95.9 grains.
