FINEST 1845 N-1

LOT 356 1845 N-1 R4 MS60 . A choice cent except for a splash of dark toning at star 2, and the dark area shows microscopic traces of carbon mixed with very faint scratches (obviously added in an attempt to remove the carbon). The carbon and scratches are not visible to the unaided eye. Otherwise the surfaces are pristine, essentially flawless. Mint red mellowing to steel brown with 15% of the obverse and 50% of the reverse showing faded mint color. MDS, Grellman die state b. The earlier fine die lines from the dentils at star 1 are gone. Graded MS60 and finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #37326. MS60 and finest known by a small margin in the Grellman census. Comes with a nice provenance.

Ex Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz 1/19/1988-Wesley A. Rasmussen, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/8/1998:72-W. M. “Jack” Wadlington, Stack’s Bowers 7/16/2015:2380 (includes the Rasmussen collection envelope, the Wadlington collection notes, and both lot tickets)

The attribution is noted on the ANACS label. Certificate #7341047
