LOT 585 1787 New Jersey Maris 60-p R4+ PLURIBS variety F12 . Struck on a large planchet. Sharpness near VF20, especially on the reverse, but covered with fine roughness under glossy dark chocolate brown toning. The roughness is most noticeable on the bottom of the reverse where there are a few planchet striations. There are a few tiny specks of verdigris and only trivial contact marks. The centers on both sides are a bit soft due to minor swelling in the center of the obverse. The date and legends are easily readable and the PLURIBS error is bold. Listed on page 69 in the 2023 “Redbook.” Weight 143.9 grains.

LOT 582 1787 New Jersey Maris 54-k R3 “Serpent Head” VG10 . At least 5 points sharper with fine roughness in the fields and protected areas, mostly on the reverse. A chip out of the rim at UM is the best identifying mark. Slightly glossy light to medium brown blending to dark olive brown in protected areas. The date is clear as are most of the legends. The “Serpent Head” is strong (see page 70 in the 2023 “Redbook). Weight 101.8 grains.

LOT 583 1787 New Jersey Maris 54-k R3 “Serpent Head” G5 . Sharper but both sides show fine roughness mixed with natural planchet striations, especially on the reverse. The highpoints are smooth. No contact marks or verdigris. Rather glossy steel brown with olive brown in protected areas. The date is easily readable and the “Serpent Head” is strong. Struck slightly off center to K-11. Weight 117.6 grains.

LOT 586 1787 New Jersey Maris 60-p R4+ PLURIBS variety VG10 . Struck on a large planchet. Sharpness near VF20 but there is an irregular planchet void in the center of the obverse and the planchet is covered with very fine granularity. No verdigris and the only contact marks are some faint hairlines on the lower part of the obverse, all lost in the slightly glossy light chocolate brown toning. Early die state, before any swelling in the center of the obverse. The date and legends are complete and clear, and the PLURIBS error is strong. Listed on page 69 in the 2023 “Redbook.” Weight 117.1 grains.
