EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 171 1787 Connecticut Miller 33.25-Z.24 R5+ DBL F15 . Glossy medium brown with darker olive brown in the most-protected areas around the devices. Smooth and quite nice except for a deep planchet void off the chin, a smaller one at the bust tip, and a thin one under the second C in CONNEC (all as struck). No verdigris or contact marks, just unevenly struck with moderate wear. The bottom of the obverse and top of the reverse are nearly void of details but everything else is strong. Later die state with a vertical die crack up from the bust of the seated figure. Weight 142.3 grains. Ex Stack’s Bowers, auction date unknown, lot 8628 (lot ticket included)

LOT 173 1787 Connecticut Miller 33.28-Z.11 R6- DBL with “Snipe Nose,” PCGS graded F15 . Glossy chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and quite nice for the grade, just worn. The only defects are a bit of dirt caked around the E in ET and a tiny planchet lamination off the left top of that letter. Late die state with a bold horizontal die crack bisecting the obverse through the end of the nose. The fields above the crack are clearly lower than the fields below, particularly behind the head. This variety is graded from the reverse since there isn’t much detail left on the obverse die. The “Snipe Nose” feature is bold. Struck with the reverse slightly misaligned to the bottom leaving the bottom of the date off the planchet. The attribution, “Snipe Nose” feature, and Twin Leaf provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 686384.15/36857273

Ex Anthony J. Terranova 2002-W. M. “Jack” Wadlington (the Twin Leaf Collection)-the Copper Mountain Collection (includes the Terranova sales envelope and Wadlington collection envelope)

LOT 172 1787 Connecticut Miller 33.27-r.4 R6 DBL F15+ . Very attractive glossy medium brown. Smooth except for a small planchet delamination at the shoulder of the seated figure. Just a few small contact marks including a couple tiny rim bruises at the bottom of the obverse, another at CT in AUCTORI, and a tiny one at the top of the staff. The reverse is considerably weaker than the obverse, as always in this die marriage. LDS with die cracks on both sides. A nice example of this tough die variety, marginally superior to the Perkins example. Weight 134.4 grains. Ex Donald A. Mituzas Collection (includes the Mituzas collection envelope)

LOT 174 1787 Connecticut Miller 33.28-Z.16 R5 DBL, a “Snipe Nose” variety, VF25 . Glossy medium tan and light olive with reddish brown toning in protected areas. Most of the planchet is smooth but the head is covered with tiny planchet chips mixed with a few light scratches, and the opposing area at the bottom of the reverse shows microscopic chipping as well. A tiny flake at the rim above the face and another at the rim left of the feet of the seated figure are the only other marks. Late die state with swelling in the field before the portrait in addition to the strong bisecting die crack through the nose. The date is weakened by the chipping but it is complete and easily readable. The legends are strong and the “Snipe Nose” crack is bold. Weight 120.9 grains.

Ex John Nogar (eBay) 4/5/1998-Neil Rothschild Collection, Early Cents Auctions 1/23/2021:152 (includes the Rothschild collection envelope and lot ticket)
