EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 469 1825 N-1 R4 VF25 . Ten points sharper but there are some nicks and light scratches in the field before the portrait and minor roughness at ICA where a patch of verdigris was removed leaving a few shallow pits behind. Frosty steel brown and light olive with overtones of light bluish steel on the reverse. E-MDS, Grellman state b, with a clear die crack through the base of the date but no crumbling or cud on the rim right of star 8. A sharply detailed example of this scarce die variety.
Ex Thomas D. Reynolds 9/20/2018-Al Nelson Collection (includes the Reynolds sales envelope)
LOT 471 1825 N-3 R2 VF35 . Ten points sharper but there are traces of crud or verdigris tucked into the most protected places around the devices. Glossy very dark olive brown and steel. Sharply struck and the only mark is a light vertical nick right of the E in ONE. LDS, Grellman state c, with two very fine die cracks on the obverse. The small lump below star 6 is still visible.
Ex David Johnson 4/28/2016-Al Nelson Collection (includes the Johnson sales envelope)
LOT 470 1825 N-2 R2 EF40 . Glossy light chocolate brown and steel with frost in protected areas and very subtle hints of light bluish steel overtone. An attractive cent with sharp details and only a few trivial marks. A few small ticks under star 9, a small pin prick over the right end of the line under CENT, and a tiny rim bruise at the first A in AMERICA are the only notable defects. MDS, Grellman state d, with a die crack from the wreath stem just right of the ribbon down to the dentils.
Ex Kagin’s 2/12/1987:4048-Douglas F. Bird 4/2015-Al Nelson Collection (includes the Kagin’s lot ticket and Bird sales ticket)
LOT 472 1825 N-4 R2 VF20+ . Choice glossy light brown and chocolate. Smooth and nearly void of marks. A small, very light nick on the front edge of the neck is the best identifying mark. MDS, Grellman state b, with the usual die cracks on the obverse but no cracks on the reverse.
