EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 463 1824/2 N-1 R1 Overdate 4 over 2 VF35 . Glossy steel and medium chocolate brown with frost in protected areas on the reverse. Smooth with a few small marks including a dull tick off the chin and another smaller one off the end of the nose. MDS, Grellman state c, with crumbling in the dentils at stars 3-5. The overdate feature is clear. Removed from an ANACS holder graded EF40 (ANACS label #5227121 included, and it shows the attribution).

LOT 460 1823/2 N-1 R2 Overdate 3 over 2 F15 . Ten points sharper but covered with microscopic porosity. Dark steel and olive brown. No verdigris, just a few minor marks. A short scratch over the T in CENT and a dull nick on the upright of that E are the best identifying marks. EDS, Grellman state a, with sharp dentils on both sides and no crumbling in the obverse dentils. The overdate feature is sharp.

LOT 461 1823 N-2 R2 F15+ . Rather glossy olive brown and steel. Nicely struck with excellent eye appeal for the grade. The only notable mark is a rim bruise at star 1. E-MDS, Grellman state b, with clearly defined rim cuds from above star 4 to star 5 and another over star 6.

LOT 464 1824 N-2 R2 NGC graded AU58 . Frosty steel brown with lighter golden steel brown in protected areas. Hints of very faded mint red are visible in some protected areas. The surfaces are satiny and there is just a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices. There are a few contact marks including a light scratch in the field before the neck, another over star 12, a dig over the N in ONE, and another on the leaf under the M in AMERICA. Only the mark over the N in ONE catches your eye. E-MDS, Grellman state a, with fine die flowlines on both sides and the usual die rust evident on the reverse, but there is no crumbling inside the top of the 4. Our grade is AU58 sharpness net AU50+ . Certification Number 2029212-088

LOT 462 1823 Private Restrike PCGS graded AU58 . Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Smooth and lightly worn suggesting it was used as a real cent in commerce. A vertical nick on the upper part of the inner section of the hair bun is the only notable mark. LDS, Grellman state g, with the final crack down through the TE in STATES into the wreath in addition to the earlier cracks and die rust. A clearly defined rim cud shows at ED in UNITED. These restrikes were struck outside the mint using discarded mint dies that had been sold for scrap. The obverse die used was the normal Newcomb-2 variety of 1823, but apparently a reverse die of the type used in 1823 was not available and they substituted a reverse die used for the 1813 Sheldon-293 variety. The result was an “1823” cent that looked nothing like the genuine mint product. Our grade is EF45. Certification Number 81627.58/26310833

LOT 465 1824 N-2 R2 VG10 . Sharper but the devices on the obverse were skillfully enhanced by adding radial lines in the stars and accenting all the hair details. Expertly retoned glossy chocolate brown and steel. LDS, Grellman state c, with a small crumble in the left notch of the N in CENT.
