EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 444 1821 N-1 R1 F12 . Sharpness VF30 or slightly better but whizzed and retoned dark chocolate brown and steel. Looks rather nice to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals the telltale signs of whizzing and retoning. In addition the obverse fields have been burnished to minimize fine pitting. E-MDS, Grellman state b, with minor crumbling between dentils from star 6 to star 7 but before any die cracks on the reverse.

LOT 441 1820 N-13 R1 Large Date, PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown . Frosty mellowed mint red fading to steel brown with about a third of the planchet showing underlying faded mint color. Sharply struck with only trivial marks including a speck of darker toning just left of star 9 and two more right of the D in UNITED. MDS, Grellman state a late, with an inner circle visible at the dentil tips from star 1 to star 4 plus the usual die crack that meanders through the date and stars. Undoubtedly from the Randall Hoard that was discovered following the US Civil War. Our grade is MS60+. (The holder is lightly scuffed.). Certification Number 1616.63/80560387

LOT 445 1821 N-2 R1 VF25 . Glossy dark steel and olive brown, a bit darker than you like to see for a lightly worn cent. The only marks are a dull nick on the upper left point of star 3 and flattened dentils under star 2 and the opposing first T in STATES thanks to a very tiny planchet clip. E-MDS, Grellman state b. The diagonal die line off the bust tip is clear but it is disconnected from the bust.

LOT 442 1820 N-14 R5- Large Date VF20 . Choice glossy light olive and steel brown. Satiny and smooth, and the reverse is significantly sharper than the obverse, as usual for this variety. The only notable marks are a couple light nicks right of the D in UNITED. A very nice example of this tough die variety. Graded F15 Choice and CC#10 in the Noyes census, his photo #26928. Comes with a nice provenance.

LOT 446 1822 N-1 R3 NGC graded XF40 . Glossy light brown and tan with steel brown toning on the devices. An attractive cent with light wear and minor marks. A small nick under star 5, a hairline scratch over the 822, and a small puff of reddish brown toning over the T in CENT are the notable marks. MDS, Grellman state b, with fine die rust evident on the reverse, clearest around the M in AMERICA. Our grade is VF30+, close to VF35. 4354861-033

LOT 443 1820 N-15 R2 Small Date AU55 . A sharp mint state cent but the color is a bit darker than you like to see on an uncirculated cent. Frosty dark steel and olive brown with microscopic roughness at D-STA. The only mark, and it is barely visible, is a fine horizontal scratch over star 13. LDS, Grellman state b, with fine die rust covering much of the planchet and crumbling in the upper notches of both N’s in ONE CENT.
