EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 400 1817 N-13 R1 PCGS graded AU58 . Lustrous light olive and bluish steel. An attractive cent with mint state eye appeal showing just a hint of rub on the highest points. A small speck of reddish toning over star 10 can help identify this cent. MDS, Grellman state b. The line connecting the bottoms of the I & C in AMERICA is weak but visible and the die lapping lines up from the dentils under the wreath stem are clear. A die state associated with the Randall Hoard of mint state cents. Previously housed in a PCGS slab graded MS63BN (PCGS label #1594.63/60096663 included). Our grade is AU58+, very close to MS60. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. (The front of the holder is scratched.). Certification Number 36586.58/45686861

LOT 398 1817 N-11 R1 PCGS graded AU55, CAC Approved . Frosty light brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and traces of lighter golden tan in some of the protected areas. Light friction is evident on the highpoints and there are traces of soft dirt in some of the most-protected areas on both sides. The only notable contact mark is a rim dent at the E in UNITED. E-MDS, Grellman state a. There are fine radial die flowlines in the fields and the repunching at the bottom of the N in CENT is clear. Our grade is net EF45+. Certification Number 1594.55/42159230

LOT 399 1817 N-12 R3 EF40 . Glossy steel brown and chocolate with satiny mint frost in protected areas. Would rate a slightly higher grade except for traces of extremely fine roughness in a few places, mostly over star 10, around TE in UNITED, and at AM. E-MDS, Grellman state b late. The doubled crack connecting the 1 & 7 has started to rise as a retained cud but the crack inside the 8 is still thin. The upper part of the hair bun is softly struck as are the opposing leaves under IC, as usual for this variety. Overall a very nice example of a variety that is difficult to find in higher grades.

LOT 401 1817 N-14 R1 AU55 . Frosty light brown with slightly darker steel brown on the highpoints. Satiny mint luster shows in the protected areas and this cent has very nice eye appeal. Just a trace of rub on the highest points of the devices. No contact marks, just some microscopic specks of darker toning inside the lower part of the wreath. LDS, Grellman state b, with weak or missing dentils around the obverse. Most likely from the Randall Hoard.
