EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 385 1816 N-8 R3 EF45 . Very attractive frosty steel brown with lighter brown in protected areas. Satiny and choice except for a small rim bruise at the first S in STATES and a fine diagonal scratch at the N in ONE. Only the rim bruise catches your eye. M-LDS, Grellman state c, with strong rim cuds 9-10 and 11-12 but no rim cud at star 3-4.

LOT 386 1816 N-9 R3 EF40+ . Choice frosty light to medium chocolate brown. Nearly flawless with smooth, hard fields on both sides and very light wear on the devices. The only marks are a few trivial ticks; one high on the neck and another over the N in CENT can help identify this cent. Close to EF45. EDS, Grellman state a, with repunching clearly visible left of the 81.

LOT 388 1817 N-2 R3 VF25 . Frosty steel brown and chocolate with lighter brown in protected areas. Smooth with light wear on the highpoints and trivial marks. A rim nick at star 2 is the only defect that catches your eye. This cent has solid EF45 sharpness and it has very nice eye appeal, but a glass reveals that it was lightly whizzed and expertly retoned long ago. The “restoration” was done with superior skill and is difficult to detect--but it is unquestionable. LDS, Grellman state f, with a bisecting die crack on the reverse in addition to the earlier cracks on both sides.

LOT 387 1817 N-1 R4 VF20 . Glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. Smooth with nice eye appeal for the grade. Five points sharper with a few minor defects including a small rim bruise at star 5 and a speck of greenish verdigris tucked between a couple strands of hair over the shoulder. M-LDS, Grellman state b early. The die crack from the tip of the coronet is very light.
