EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 366 1798 S-147 R5- Large 8, Style I Hair G6 . Rather glossy medium steel brown with lighter brown in protected areas. No corrosion or verdigris, only trivial marks including a tiny planchet chip left of the denominator, a shallow depression (planchet insufficiency) at the fraction bar, and a shallow low spot between the R & I in AMERICA (all as struck). EDS, Breen state I, before any visible die cracks. Unevenly struck with weakness at LIBE and the lower left of the reverse. The date is strong. Graded G6 and CC#27 in the Noyes census, his photo #37289.

LOT 369 Trio of 1798 Cents with Small 8 and Style II Hair . Includes S-185 R2 LDS VG7 net G5 for microscopic roughness, S-186 R2 M-LDS VF35 net VG8 for cleaning and roughness, and S-187 R1 M-LDS VF25 net VG7 for fine roughness. The last 2 appear to be metal detector finds. Lot of 3 coins.

LOT 367 Trio of 1798 Cents . Includes S-159 R3 Small 8, Style I Hair EDS VG10 net G4 for roughness and light cleaning, 1800 S-212 R3 M-LDS VG8 net G5 for minor roughness and light cleaning, and 1807 S-274 R2 Small Fraction VF25 net VG8 for light cleaning and roughness. All have a clear date and may have been recovered via metal detecting. Lot of 3 coins.

LOT 370 1798 S-187 R1 Small 8, Style II Hair NGC XF Details, Environmental Damage . Rather glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown on the highpoints. Looks smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals uniform microscopic granularity on both sides. A speck of verdigris at the bottom of the neck, some dull scratches at the bust tip and on the rim under the 98, and a light scratch in the hair over the shoulder are the notable marks. None of the defects catches your eye. E-MDS, Breen state II, with die cracks on both sides but no cud breaks. Our grade is VF35 sharpness net VF25. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. LOT 368 1798 S-171 R4 Small 8, Style II Hair VG7 . Slightly sharper but very lightly cleaned, now nicely retoned light olive brown and tan. Smooth except for a small spot of minor roughness at the top of CA. MDS with a raised cud break left of the L in LIBERTY. Graded VG8 sharpness net VG7 and CC#27 in the Noyes census, his photo #69692.
