FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION 1793-1814 CENTS

LOT 222 1798 S-173 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8 F15+ . Glossy mix of medium brown, chocolate, and reddish brown with a few small puffs of darker olive brown on both sides. Slightly sharper where properly struck but the strike is uneven, strong at the top of the obverse and bottom of the reverse but weaker at the bottom of the obverse and top of the reverse (the die faces were not in proper axial alignment). The surfaces are smooth but there are numerous small, dull marks on the jaw and neck including a few obvious ones at the throat. LDS, Breen state VIII or IX, with strong cud breaks at LI and ERTY. The narrow rim cud at CA that identifies Breen’s state IX actually occurs well before the cud break at LI, but it is barely visible due to wear and centering on this example.
