EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 172 1797 S-140 R1 EF40 . Glossy medium chocolate and olive brown. Smooth and very attractive with just light contact marks. The notable marks are a hairline scratch in the field below the hair ribbon and some faint hairline scratches over CENT. Otherwise this cent is choice. LDS, Breen state IX, with die cracks and significant swelling, especially at the bust. Graded EF40 and tied for CC#6 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #25945. A beautiful example of a great die state.

LOT 173 1797 S-141 R4 VF20 . Sharpness near EF40 and beautiful if not for a grouping of 4 dull scratches in the field off the chin and neck. The only other notable mark is a diagonal nick over the N in ONE. Glossy medium brown with frosty tan in protected areas and slightly darker steel brown on the highpoints. M-LDS, Breen state III, with a strong vertical die crack through the left end of the wreath ribbon. A bit unevenly struck thanks to the die state. Graded EF40 net VF30 and CC#6 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF35 net VF20 and tied for CC#9, his photo #26286. An imperfect cent but still among the finer examples of this tough variety.
