Fred 2 Book
LOT 734 1856 N-11 R1 Upright 5 PCGS graded MS62 Red & Brown. Frosty mint red mellowing to steel brown with 25% of the obverse and 65% of the reverse showing mint color. The reverse is satiny and choice but the obverse is a bit “busy” with some tiny contact marks visible under magnification. A puff of darker toning at the 5 and a speck of carbon at the tip of the wreath ribbon are the best identifying marks. Scarce EDS, die state a, with smooth, slightly reflective fields on the obverse and a sharp spike from the left top of the R in AMERICA. Our grade is MS62. Tied for CC#10 overall but tied for second finest of those seen in the early die state in the Grellman census. 1920.62/29478813
LOT 733 1856 N-10 R1 Upright 5 AU58. Lustrous light to medium brown. Satiny with mint state eye appeal, but there is a trace of friction on the very highest points of the devices. Just a few minor marks including a very light scratch right of stars 10 & 11 and a barely visible rim bruise at star 10. MDS, die state b. The die lines from the dentils over the R in AMERICA are dull and weak but still visible.
