EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 599 1852 N-8 R2 MS63. Frosty mint red and light olive with 25% of the planchet showing mint color. Satiny frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal of this cent is really nice. The only flaws are a spot of very fine carbon between the 8 & 5 and a speck of carbon left of the date. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state b, with a faint die crack from the lowest curl down to the dentils passing just left of star 13.
LOT 602 1852 N-11 R1 MS63. Lustrous steel brown and olive with very mellowed mint color covering about 30% of the planchet. Satiny and very attractive with just a couple trivial marks. A speck of darker toning left of star 3 and a tiny mark nestled against the left side of star 8 are the best identifying defects. MDS, die state d, with flowlined fields but no cud breaks.

LOT 600 1852 N-8 R2 PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Lustrous light to medium steel brown, the obverse a couple shades darker than the reverse, with at least 5% of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. Satiny and very attractive, virtually flawless. The best identifying mark is a tiny spot of slightly darker toning close over the tip of the coronet, but it is virtually invisible to the unaided eye. LDS, die state d. There are three very fine die cracks including a final one that extends from the dentils through the D in UNITED to the wreath below. Our grade is MS63. The attribution and Iskra Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 147250.65/81161849
LOT 603 1852 N-11 R1 EF45. Sharpness close to mint state but there is a small planchet delamination at ED in UNITED (as struck), plus a few carbon spots. The spots are on the top of the bust at the neck and on the M in AMERICA. The delamination is a mint defect but it does catch your eye. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with tan in protected areas. TDS, die state e2, with a strong rim cud over TES-O. CC#5 of the terminal die state in the Grellman census.

LOT 604 1852 N-12/13 R1 Repunched 18 AU55. A sharp mint state cent that was cleaned and is partially retoned. Medium steel brown with faded red on half of the obverse and very faded red in protected areas on the reverse. The toning on the reverse could pass as original but half the obverse hasn’t retoned sufficiently since the cleaning. A dark spot near the wreath below the N in CENT is the only notable mark. EDS, die state a, with repunching visible on the 18, clearest on the 1. This is Newcomb’s #12.
LOT 601 1852 N-10 R2+ AU50+. Close to mint state with nice eye appeal, but there are some tiny contact marks. The notable marks are a light nick off the upper right point of star 2, some ticks on the chin and jaw, a collection of microscopic ticks on the rim over star 6, and a small rim nick over the A in STATES. None of the marks is significant but there are too many for this level of sharpness. Frosty light to medium brown. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state a late. The fine die lines from the dentils at star 2 are dull but visible.
