 GRELLMAN PLATE COIN

LOT 593 1852 N-5 R2 VF30. Glossy brown with darker chocolate and olive brown toning in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and there are a few minor marks. A dull nick just off the tip of the wreath stem, another under the N in CENT, and a small rim nick under the end of the wreath ribbon are the best identifying marks. Extremely rare LDS, die state c, with a strong rim cud break from star 5 to star 6. Tied for CC#1 of only 9 known with the single rim cud. This is the plate coin for the die state in the 2001 edition of the Grellman reference on the cents of 1840-1857.  Ex Chris McCawley 9/1998-McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/7/2000:2294-R. LOT 594 1852 N-5 R2 EF40+. Slightly sharper but there are a few rim nicks on an otherwise choice cent. The rim nicks are at star 2 and star 10, and a barely visible rim bruise at the O in OF rounds out the marks. Glossy light olive brown with flowline frost in the fields and protected areas. TDS, die state d, with two strong rim cuds at stars 4-6. CC#2 of 12 known in this terminal die state in the Grellman census.

LOT 595 1852 N-6 R2- AU58. Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with frosty lighter brown in protected areas and traces of mellowed mint red on the reverse. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the devices. The surfaces are choice, void of marks or other distractions. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state a, with lightly flowlined fields.
