EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
DISCOVERY COIN
LOT 586 1851 N-44 R7 Fair-2. Sharpness VG8 but there is a crude hole punched through the coin at the bottom of star 8 (most likely by a nail, perhaps to attach the coin above the entrance to a dwelling). Otherwise smooth with trivial marks. Glossy light olive blending to medium chocolate and olive brown in protected areas. The repunching at both of the 1’s is clear and the “puffy” or “pillowed” fields on both sides are obvious. This is the discovery coin for the die variety (discovered by Donald Weathers in 10/1991) and since then 6 more have been found. One of the rarest varieties in the 1840-1857 series of large cents. This piece is CC#7 among the known examples (only 2 of which grade better than VG10).

LOT 587 1851 N-45 R4 AU50. Glossy tan and light steel brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Frosty mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. A tiny vertical nick on the jaw and another between stars 12 & 13 are the only notable marks. Shallow low spots cover the neck and portions of the field inside the wreath (as struck). M-LDS, die state b, with die cracks at the top of the obverse.

CHOICE RED & BROWN N-1 EARLY STATE
LOT 588 1852 N-1/2 R1 Repunched 185, PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous mint red faded to light olive and steel brown on the devices with nearly half of the mint red still visible. A spot of reddish steel brown toning over star 3, a faint planchet lamination in the dentils just over star 11, and a trio of tiny spots at ER in AMERICA are the best identifying marks, and they are not significant. This cent has great eye appeal. The fields are smooth and very slightly reflective. EDS, die state a. The repunching under the base of the 1 is strong and delicate repunching shows inside the tops of the 8 & 5. This is Newcomb’s #1. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#4 for the variety but finest of the early state in the Grellman census. 147233.65/18900461
