 MOSTLY RED N-19/16

LOT 524 1850 N-19/16 R1 MS65. Lustrous bright mint red fading to steel brown and olive on the highpoints with nearly two thirds of the bright mint color showing, mostly on the reverse. Very attractive and nearly flawless. The notable marks are a light diagonal nick in the center of the cheek, a tiny scuff close over the tip of the coronet, and a puff of slightly darker steel toning in the field left of star 11. LDS, die state b (Newcomb’s old #16). The obverse die lines and the lump between the 1 & 8 have been polished off the die, and just a few die lines remain visible left of the C in CENT. Removed from a PCGS holder graded MS65RB (PCGS label #405905.65/16210035 included, and it shows the attribution). Our grade is MS65. CC#3 in the Grellman census, and it comes with a nice provenance. LOT 525 1850 N-20 R5+ EF40+. Sharpness near AU50 but there are several tiny cuts on the edge at star 5. Otherwise this cent is choice; a tiny tick right of the upper lip being the only additional mark. Frosty tan and light steel brown with slightly darker steel brown on the highpoints. EDS, die state a. The fine die line through RIC is clear. Tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census.
