EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 522 1850 N-19/16 R1 AU55. Glossy light to medium brown with frost covering the fields and protected areas. Looks mint state but there is a touch of friction evident under magnification. No spots or stains, just a few microscopic ticks of no significance. A small tick over star 12 can help identify this cent. E-MDS, die state a late. Most of the die lines on the obverse are gone but the lump between the 1 & 8 is still visible.

CHOICE RED & BROWN N-19/16
LOT 523 1850 N-19/16 R1 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive mint red toning down to light olive and bluish steel brown on the highpoints, at least a third of the bright original mint red remains, mostly on the reverse. There are a couple dull, tiny ticks right of star 2 and a few more under the hair bun; otherwise the surfaces are pristine. A sharp, lustrous cent that has great eye appeal. MDS, die state b (Newcomb’s old #16). The diagonal die lines on the obverse and the lump left of the 8 have been lapped off the die, but some of the die lines on the reverse are still visible. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#8 in the Grellman census. Comes with a nice provenance. The Dan Holmes provenance is noted on the PCGS label. 1890.65/19132792 Ex Herman Halpern, Stack’s 3/16/1988:641-J. R. Frankenfield, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/17/2001:1593-Daniel W.
