EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 898 1854 N-8 R1 AU58. A sharp mint state cent that was dipped and has retoned glossy light olive and light steel. The toning is attractive and the only notable marks are a couple microscopic ticks on the nostril and another on the eyelash. E-MDS, die state b early, with fine radial die flowlines in the fields.

LOT 900 1854 N-11 R2 AU50. Sharpness very close to mint state but recolored reddish olive brown and chocolate. Underlying very faded red shows through in protected areas. No stains, spots, or contact marks, and the eye appeal of this cent is quite nice. The strike at the ear is a bit weak, as always on this die variety, but everything else is sharp. LDS, die state c, with flowlined fields.

LOT 899 1854 N-9 R2 “Dartboard Obverse” AU50. Choice glossy medium brown with light chocolate on the highpoints. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas on both sides, and this cent has very nice eye appeal. A tiny splash of darker olive brown toning near the dentils at stars 12-13 is the only notable mark. MDS, die state c early. A very shallow low spot covers the upper part of the neck, which is typical for this variety, and a fine die flowline reaches from the left end of the base of the 1 to a space between dentils below. The 1 punched into the right side of the ear is obvious and part of the 8 is visible right of the Y (the so-called “Dartboard Obverse” variety).
