INDIANAPOLIS EAC 2024 SHELDON PLATE COIN

LOT 275 1797 S-124 R5 VG8. Sharpness F12 but covered with fine roughness and there are some contact marks on the reverse. The roughness is strongest in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon and in a small patch in the field off the chin. There is a strong nick at ED that created a subtle bend in the planchet, a dull nick at NE in ONE, and several rim nicks at TED and TAT. Slightly glossy chocolate brown with lighter brown toning on the devices. The date is strong and the legends are complete in spite of weakness inside the wreath. M-LDS, Breen state V, with obvious swelling at the bust. This cent was considered by Dr. Sheldon to be the finest known of the variety when he wrote Early American Cents in 1948, and the obverse is plated in Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. Comes with a very nice provenance.

LOT 276 1797 S-124 R5 NGC graded VG8. Partly glossy light to medium chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, but there are some marks including myriad very fine hairline scratches on the lower part of the portrait and a light rim bruise at BE in LIBERTY. Otherwise just trivial marks. M-LDS, Breen state V, with strong swelling that nearly obliterates the 97 and bust. OF is weak as well because it is opposite the swollen bust, but everything else is complete and clear. Our grade is net G6, but this cent has the eye appeal of a higher grade. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.

LOT 277 1797 S-125 R5 VG8. Sharpness VF20 but covered with fine to moderate granularity, strongest at the throat. Shallow verdigris covers the protected areas on both sides. Just minor contact marks including several fine diagonal scratches on the obverse (mostly lost in the toning) and a small rim nick at CA. LDS, Breen state III, with obvious swelling through the bust and behind the portrait. The 97 is weakened by the swelling but it still readable, and the details on the reverse are strong.
