LOT 267 1796 S-115 R3 Draped Bust VG8. A couple points sharper with uniform extremely fine roughness covering the planchet. No verdigris and only a few minor marks including a few small chips on the bust and rim nicks at ME in AMERICA. Slightly glossy medium olive and steel brown. LDS, Breen state IX early. The cud break at TY is strong and the top of the adjacent R is connected to the cud by a die crack. The date and legends are complete and clear except for weakness inside the wreath.

LOT 269 1796 S-117 R5+ Draped Bust VG8. Sharpness VF20 but the surfaces are covered with fine to moderate roughness mixed with a few small pits, and there are traces of greenish verdigris at the dentils over the second A in AMERICA where there is a deep pit. A short hairline scratch extends through the base of Y in LIBERTY. Rather glossy olive brown and chocolate with splashes of reddish light chocolate brown on both sides. The date and legends are all bold. Great detail but not attractive. Nonetheless this was the best example of the variety in the famous Holmes collection. MDS, Breen state III. A fine die crack extends through the tops of RTY.

LOT 268 1796 S-116 R5- Draped Bust PCGS graded VG8. Partly glossy steel brown and chocolate. Looks smooth but a glass reveals traces of microscopic roughness and a speck of verdigris at the top of the L in LIBERTY. The notable marks are a small rim bruise at the T in LIBERTY and a diagonal hairline scratch through the shoulder. LDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on the obverse. The date and legends are complete and clear. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net VG8. A nice example for the grade in spite of the minor defects. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 35834.08/36453775

LOT 270 1796 S-118 R5+ Draped Bust Fair-2. Dull dark steel and covered with fine roughness. The obverse is weaker than the reverse, perhaps a 1+/3 split, but the date is complete and easily readable . The notable defects are a curved scratch over ATE, a small pit at AT, and some greenish verdigris on the rim at ICA (or at least where ICA should be).
