2024 EAC Sale
INDIANAPOLIS EAC 2024
LOT 204 1794 S-56 R3 VF20. The so-called “Office Boy Reverse” variety due to the poor layout of the lettering on the reverse. Five points sharper but cleaned and retoned glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter brown on the highpoints of the reverse. The surfaces are smooth, void of any notable marks. LDS, Breen state III, with a die crack under the cap and delicate die clashmarks. The poorly placed lettering on the reverse is clear. Removed from a PCGS slab as XF Detail Environmental Damage (PCGS label #35630.97/34430295 included and it shows the attribution).
Ex 2017 EAC Sale, lot 110-McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 2/18/2018:312 (last lot ticket included)
SHARP S-57 EARLY STATE
LOT 205 1794 S-57 R1 PCGS AU Detail, Environmental Damage. Sharpness very close to mint state with just a hint of rub on the highpoints, but there are numerous tiny planchet fissures on the obverse, mostly on the upper right half. There is no trace of “Environmental Damage.” The reverse is nearly flawless showing only a few microscopic planchet flakes near the fraction. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate. No verdigris and the only contact mark I can find is a faint hairline hidden between the pole and bust. Rare EDS, Breen state I, before the die defect over ICA. Graded MS60 with planchet defects on the obverse in the Breen/Bland census. Difficult to grade because the planchet flaws are so obvious. Our grade is AU55 sharpness net EF40. Previously housed in an ANACS holder graded UNC Details Net AU50 on Defective Planchet (ANACS label #2411751 included). 901374.97/48226513

LOT 206 1794 S-58 R3 F12. Sharpness near VF35 but lightly burnished and retoned glossy medium steel brown. There is a rim dent at IB in LIBERTY and obvious pitting at the mouth into the cheek. Otherwise smooth with trivial marks and no verdigris. M-LDS, Breen state III, Heck state 5 late, with a strong crack at UNIT creating a partially raised retained cud break. This was the first coin purchased by Lucien Birkler, and it came from John J. Ford, Jr.
