EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 608 1802/0 C-2 Electrotype Copy F12. Attractive glossy chocolate brown with lighter brown on the highpoints. Later die state with die rust on the obverse. A deceptive copy with no trace of the undertype base metal.

LOT 612 1804 C-5 R4 Spiked Chin VG8. Slightly sharper but expertly recolored glossy chocolate brown. Smooth with trivial contact marks on the obverse. MDS, Manley state 4.0.

LOT 613 1804 C-6 R2 Spiked Chin F15+. Sharpness VF25 with a few spots of fine porosity on the rim including one under the 4, another over the I in LIBERTY, another at S-O, and one just right of the fraction. Otherwise smooth and attractive. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0, with fine die cracks on the reverse but no cud breaks. The Spiked Chin is obvious.

LOT 609 1803 C-4 R4 VG10. Glossy medium chocolate and steel. Smooth and attractive for the grade. The only marks are a very light scuff in the field near the rim behind the portrait and a pinprick on the bust. Struck with the reverse rotated 20 degrees CW.

Ex Tom Keenan (bourse dealer) 1/10/1993-Carvin Goodridge Goodridge Estate, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/2012:121 (includes the Goodridge collection envelope and lot ticket)

Ex Tucson Coin 2/2013

LOT 614 1804 C-6 R2 Spiked Chin G5. Slightly sharper with fine scratches on both sides. Glossy medium chocolate brown with smooth surfaces. EDS, Manley state 1.0, with no obvious die cracks.

LOT 610 1804 C-1 R3 VG7. Sharpness at least VF20 but dark steel and covered with microscopic roughness mixed with small patches of reddish verdigris. The rim is flattened from K-3 clockwise to under the 18 and at the corresponding rim at S-OF-A. Called a double strike by some but we are highly doubtful. Damage in our opinion. You decide. EDS, Manley state 1.0, Fuhrman state 1, with a fine die crack down through the second T in STATES.

LOT 615 1804 C-6 R2 Spiked Chin F15+. Slightly sharper with a few too many small nicks for the higher grade. A spot of darker toning right of the Y in LIBERTY is the best identifying mark. Attractive glossy tan and medium brown. E-MDS, Manley 3.0, Fuhrman state 5, with a strong die crack through MERIC but no cud at ME.

LOT 611 1804 C-5 R3+ Spiked Chin G5. Glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. Smooth and perhaps a point sharper, particularly on the obverse, but there are a few minor marks. The notable ones are a couple light rim bruises near the bust tip and a small planchet chip at the dentils over the F in OF. The date and legends are clear except for weakness at ED-ST due to swelling in that area.

LOT 616 1804 C-6 R2 Spiked Chin VG10+. Choice glossy light chocolate brown. Smooth with excellent eye appeal, just worn. M-LDS, Manley state 9.0, with cud breaks on the reverse. The Spiked Chin feature is obvious.
