EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
RARE 1846 N-21 WITH CUD
LOT 478 1846 N-21 R5+ F15. Sharpness VF35 but there are some contact marks including a fine but fresh scratch from star 2 to the rim over star 10 plus a half dozen tiny digs along the path of the scratch (also fresh). Otherwise smooth with minor marks. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown. Very rare LDS, state b, with a triangular rim cud over star 7. The cud break is bold on this example.
LOT 481 1847 N-22 R3 AU50. Frosty steel brown with a few tiny specks of reddish brown on both sides, mostly above the E in STATES. Satiny and attractive with sharp details and just a light touch of friction on the highpoints. MDS, die state d, with fine die cracks on both sides.
LOT 479 1847 N-14 R3 AU50+. Frosty medium steel brown and olive. Lustrous and very attractive with no defects and just a light touch of friction on the devices. A pair of tiny ticks on the left side of the O in ONE can help identify this cent, but you need a glass to see them. M-LDS, die state c. The die lines from the dentils at star 1 are weak but visible and the reverse is cracked. Comes with a nice provenance.
Ex G. Lee Kuntz (acquired at the 1972 ANA Convention bourse), Superior 10/6/1991:542-McCawley & Grellman Auctions 7/1993:118-R. S. Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/ Superior 6/1998:557-Terry Denman Collection (includes the Denman collection envelope)
LOT 482 1847 N-24 R1 AU50+. Frosty uniform light brown with mint luster in the fields and protected areas. Just trivial ticks with a touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. LDS, die state d, with several die cracks on the reverse (Newcomb’s old #9). A very shallow low spot covers the field behind the portrait (caused by lubricant/ debris stuck on the die). Without the mint-made low spot this cent would rate a slightly higher grade.
LOT 480 1847 N-21 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Frosty medium steel brown with generous traces of mint red showing on both sides. Satiny and choice if not for three spots of fine carbon: one at the curl on the neck, another between stars 6 & 7, and another at the top of the U in UNITED. LDS, die state b, with a die crack through the top of ME to the dentils off both ends. Our grade is net MS60. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 37317.64/30006757
