EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
BEAUTIFUL 1830 MEDIUM LETTERS
LOT 439 1830 N-6 R4 Medium Letters VF35. Sharpness at least 5 points better with beautiful surfaces and great eye appeal, but the color is not original. Lustrous brown and light chocolate. The only contact mark, and it is barely visible, is a faint diagonal hairline scratch right of star 4. A small spot of slightly lighter toning between stars 7 & 8 is the best identifying mark. LDS, Grellman state b, with a fine die crack from the bust tip to the dentils left of the date. A really attractive example of this popular “Redbook” variety.
LOT 440 1830 N-7 R3 Large Letters VF20. Glossy medium brown and chocolate with lighter brown toning in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. Just a few trivial marks including a tiny nick near the hair under star 8 that may help identify this cent. MDS with the usual die crack from the tip of the bust to the dentils below star 1. The strike is a bit soft, as always on this variety, because it was struck using heavily worn dies from earlier marriages. Comes with a nice provenance. Removed from a PCGS holder graded VF30 (PCGS label # 36952.30/32848390 included, and it shows the attribution and Twin Leaf Collection provenance).
LOT 441 1830 N-10 R4+ F15. Sharpness VF25 or slightly better but there are some contact marks on otherwise smooth surfaces. The notable marks are some diagonal scratches on both sides, small nicks in the field between the chin and star 1, and a rim dent under the end of the wreath stem. Glossy light to medium chocolate with lighter brown on the highpoints. M-LDS, Grellman state c, with a raised retained cud over ATES. The cud is clearly raised at both ends but not in the middle. A neat die state.
