EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 247 1796 S-98 R4 Draped Bust F15. Sharpness VF35 with choice surfaces and great eye appeal if not for a large X lightly pin scratched across the obverse. The only other defects are a small rim nick under the lowest curl and a couple more opposite the nose. Certainly a solid condition census example if not for the two scratches. Glossy medium brown and chocolate with frosty lighter brown covering the protected areas. E-MDS, Breen state II. Listed as VF30 net VF20 in the Breen/Bland condition census. Comes with an impressive provenance. Ex Dr. Thomas Hall 9/7/1909-Virgil Brand-New Netherlands Coin Co. (privately) 9/26/1951-C. Douglas Smith 1970-R. S. LOT 248 1796 S-99 R5 Draped Bust G5. The obverse is slightly weaker, the reverse stronger, a 4/7 split. Smooth and glossy with medium brown and chocolate toning. Beautiful for the grade, just worn. The bottom of the date is wearing into the rim as is the top of LIBERTY, but the legends on the reverse are complete. EDS, Breen state I, before the obverse die cracked. Comes with a very nice provenance.

LOT 249 1796 S-100 R5 Draped Bust AG3. Partly glossy olive brown with lighter brown toning covering the devices. The surfaces are a bit uneven, particularly in the field behind the portrait, and fine granularity covers the reverse. No verdigris and the only notable marks are fine hairline scratches on the reverse. The date is weak but complete and easily readable as are the legends.

LOT 250 1796 S-101 R5- Draped Bust PCGS graded F12. Mostly glossy chocolate brown with lighter brown on the devices. There is a very light dusting of dirt or fine carbon in the field over the bust and before the neck but the remainder of the planchet is smooth. The only notable mark is a fine diagonal hairline in the hair left of the eye. EDS, Breen state I. The obverse is slightly misaligned to the bottom but the date is completely on the planchet. The date and legends are strong. A nice example of this tough variety. Our grade is VG10. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 35783.12/33211180
