EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 191 1794 S-28 R2 VG10. Sharpness near VF25 but covered with fine to moderate roughness, strongest on the reverse. Areas of shallow dark greenish verdigris show in protected areas on both sides, especially on the reverse. Reddish brown and light chocolate with lighter brown on the highpoints. A small pit on the chin and a dull dent at ME can help identify this cent. EDS.

 S-30 LOVE TOKEN

LOT 192 1794 S-30 R1 VG8 Engraved Love Token. Glossy steel brown and light chocolate. The obverse is quite nice except for a collection of digs at ER in LIBERTY; the reverse was smoothed off and beautifully engraved as (apparently) a love token. HOPE STRATTON 1795 with an ornate border. Research by Ray Medhurst conducted in July 2019 using church records and the Hinshaw Index to Selected Quaker Records, 1680-1940, found a Hope Stratten in Camden, NJ. She was born in the 1780’s to Isaiah and Mary Stratten of Camden, NJ. She was a member of the New Jersey Quakers, and she married Abraham Reeves in 1803. Dan Holmes used to say these coins are only worth a penny; it’s the story we pay for. Certainly true for this one.

 TERMINAL STATE S-32

LOT 193 1794 S-32 R2 PCGS graded XF40. Glossy chocolate brown with frosty lighter brown in protected areas on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth except for pre-striking planchet chips that show along the right edge of the obverse and the opposing area at ES-OF-A (thanks to axially misaligned dies, a common situation for this variety). The only notable flaw is a pit or chip left of the bottom of the O in OF. LDS, Breen state V, Heck 9. Struck with the reverse rotated 70 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation--by far the largest rotation seen for the variety by this cataloger. Our grade is VF25. 901374.40/21677960
