EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 160 1835 C-1 R1 EF45. Frosty chocolate and light brown. A small puff of reddish brown toning on the I in UNITED is the best identifying mark. EDS, Manley state 1.0, with hard, slightly reflective fields.

LOT 158 1834 C-1 R1 EF45+. Glossy mix of light and medium brown tones. Light wear on the devices and trivial ticks including a small one in the field before the mouth. Later die state with strong die clashmarks on both sides. Removed from an ANACS slab graded AU58 (ANACS label #4557118 included, and it shows the attribution).

Ex Heritage Auctions #1171, lot 7111 (lot ticket included)

LOT 159 1835 C-1 R1 MS60. Lustrous medium brown. The notable defects are a spot of very fine verdigris at the dentils above the head and a few specks of darker toning on both sides. Later die state with die clashmarks on both sides. The repunching on the 5 is clear.

LOT 161 1835 C-2 R1 AU58. Frosty light olive and bluish steel. A shallow planchet flake under the wreath ribbon is the only notable defect. LDS, Manley state 3.0, with die clashmarks and an arcing die crack across the upper reverse. The reverse is rotated 20 degrees clockwise.

 DOUBLE STRUCK 1835 C-2

LOT 162 1835 C-2 R1 AU50. Lustrous light olive and reddish brown with lighter steel brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers the protected areas and there are no notable marks. Double struck. One strike was normal and centered on the planchet while the other strike was 35% off center. Undertype from the off center reverse is clearest on the rim at the bottom of the reverse. AME shows from the T in CENT down into the leaves below, and parts of IC show on the rim under the stem end. The only evidence of undertype on the obverse is a faint arc across the bust and a depression on the rim above the back of the head. It appears that the off center strike came first and it may have been a uniface strike (reverse only). A great mint error. LDS, Manley state 3.0.

Ex Thomas D. Reynolds 2/6/1998-R. Tettenhorst (The Davy Collection), McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/19/2010:347 (lot ticket included)
